About This Image

W.H. Bettle stamp on verso of the mount.Bettle was born in 1873 and was an amateur photographer, who worked as superintendent of meters at Public Service Electric & Gas in Newark, NJ. Bettle, from East Orange, NJ, was part of a larger international movement of photographers that were active in camera clubs from the 1920s through the 1940s. Bettle was a talented member of this movement. His photographs were shown in over 100 exhibitions between 1932 and 1939.During the 1930s, Bettle took several trips to Europe on luxury liners, where he made some of his best photographs.Like most camera club members of the 30s, Bettle's photographs are softly focused in the Pictorialist style. But, unlike most Pictorialists, Bettle photographed details of the ships and used lines, angles, and shadows to make formal compositions, in the style of Charles Sheeler and some of the American Precisionist painters. His photographs are modern and more abstract than the traditional camera club style of his day. In 1950, He died at age 77.He exhibited extensively at the photo salons of the mid to late 1930s. The Worcester Art Museum and the Brooklyn Museum of Art both have holdings of his work.
