About This Image
A series of 12 photo strips with two images on each for a total of 24 images. Most are of very early airplanes photographed in the air and at their hangers. These are all cornered in to a sheet that dates to the 1870s, but the photos are later from about 1909. There are numerous notations in pencil on the sheet that they are attached to and pen notations on the verso of each print. An important and early document of early aviation. Some identifications (although these may not be exactly accurate considering the script) include the following: Latham Monoplane Antoinette, Legayneau, Georges Chavez Biplane Farman, Van den Burg, Nogues, Gaudard, monoplane Blériot, Mot. Gnome, Metrol Bi-plane Voisin, Moulou monoplane, etc. Most are major names in early aviation. The Bleriot was the first plane to officially cross the channel for instance. The group were likely taken at an early and historic air show, perhaps at the August 1909 show in Rheims, France.
