Below in the photo are the words: "Entered according to Act of Congress A.D.1865 by Chs. Magnus in the Clerks Office of the 5th Dist of N.Y." In the shield above it reads "Martyr of Freedom".For this memorial photographic print, Magnus reproduced a somewhat mysterious early presidential portrait of Lincoln dating from circa March-June 1861. The photographer may have been W. L. Germon; the most famous example was inscribed to Lucy Speed, mother of the president''s close friend Joshua Fry Speed. Ostendorf O-55, pages 88-89.
