About This Image

Eugène Lemaire is a Belgium photographer of some note. His work is exceedingly rare, because most is in the Musée de la Photographie/Charleroi, the Belgium photography museum.Born in 1874 in Vieux-Molhain, France, Lemaire was active in the 1920s and 1930s photography salons. His work was exhibited in Los Angeles, Canada, Belgium, France and Germany. He was a personal friend of Leonard Misonne. After Misonne died, Lemaire moved away from Pictorialism to a more modernist approach. Even as a Pictorialist, his work was different than most, relying heavily on depth of field. His still lifes are exceptional. He died in 1948 in Charleroi, Belgium. He is listed in the Histoire de la Photographie en Belgique and in the George Eastman House database.
