With photographer's stamp on verso and his hand-lettered name and location on the recto in the margin.Henry Holmes Smith was born in 1909 in Bloomington, IL, and studied at Illinois State University and the Art Institute of Chicago before obtaining his BS degree at Ohio State in 1933.Smith then worked as a freelance photographer in Chicago before taking a job making portraits at the Marshall Fields studio there.In 1937, when Gyorgy Kepes wanted a photography instructor and lab manager for the course at the New Bauhaus School, he picked Smith for the job, but the course closed the following year. Smith continued to be influenced by this experience in his experimental photography work.From 1940-42 he was an associate editor for the magazine 'Minicam Photography'. He became an instructor in photography at Indiana University in 1947, and a professor there from 1965-77.Smith died in 1986.
