Powerful image of a steamboat pushing barges on a river. Named after noted Canadian explorer who made the first journey across North America north of Mexico, the steel-frame paddle wheeler built at Fort Smith and launched in 1908 by Captain J.W. Mills was operated on Great Slave Lake in the 1920s by the Hudson's Bay Company. It was mothballed by the HBC in 1923 but reentered service during 1929/1930. In the 1940s it was commissioned for use during the Canol oil project along the Mackenzie River but was no longer being operated in 1947. It had a 125' keel, and could handle a 115 ton cargo with 40 passengers.Heilbron was born in 1903 in Chicago and was a professional commercial and fashion photographer for over 50 years. He worked for Life, Time and Fortune magazines in the 1930s-40s.In 1938 he became the first instructor of photography at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where he taught until 1942.From the late 1930s through the 1940s, Heilbron became fascinated with photographing the Ringling Brothers Circus whenever they came to Chicago, even occasionally traveling with the circus and its performers. His photographs of circus life and the performers are some of the most intimate and penetrating ever taken.Heilbron died in 1997 in Galena, IL.
