About This Image

No, I really did not make up that title. Signed in pencil on recto of the mount. Verso has Blumann's Art Noveau label with printed title and process. Sigismund Blumann (active 1900s-1930s) was a California Bay-area photographer active in the California Camera and Los Angeles Camera Clubs. He was also a fellow of the Royal Photographic Society in the UK. He was very interested in alternative processes, particularly bromoils. He was editor of Camera Craft from 1924 to 1933, his last issue being August 1933. He then started Photo Art in November 1933 and continued to publish it until 1940. In the 1930s, while editing Photo Art magazine, he established a print service department where readers could purchase salon prints for their own collections. He wrote, "There is no educational factor in art so potent as a collection of pictures." He wrote several books, including one called the Darkroom Notebook and was published numerous time in the American Annual of Photography from 1917 to 1927.
