About This Image
Photographer's early stamp on verso (no postal code and print doesn't light up under black light). Image was used in the Family of Man exhibition. Notation and title in ink, probably in photographer's hand. A very early print.Taken in an ancient redwood Californian forest with a lush growth of oxalis covering the forest floor, the photographer's daughter poses, helping her father create what he described as, "an image of interesting contrasts - an ancient virginal forest and a young virginal child. These contrasts manifested the dynamic, cyclic character of natural forces." He once described the making of it saying, " I felt the light was just right, everything was spatially balanced and the relationships between events - the young child, the fresh forest covering, the prehistoric trees, the rotting logs - were all strong and exciting." His wife provided a carefully placed blanket between their daughter and the prickly redwood needles below the soft leaves.
