About This Exhibit

Jerry Spagnoli, Anatomical Study (Hands and Hip)
The work in this Special Exhibit is unique. And that aspect was chosen by each author. There is only one of a kind, even though there might be variant images available.
Most often it is the medium itself that limits the quantity. Processes such as daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, autochromes or Polaroids provide a self-limiting function, because they only produce singular objects without the inherent ability to be reproduced further, as from negatives or digital files.
Of course, besides physical limitation, an artist's decision-making can also provide the same uniqueness, making any image (or unique type of print) in what is essentially an edition of 1/1.
And then there are circumstances that can assure a photograph's rarity, if not its singular nature. Edward Weston made many of his images in editions of 50, but didn't complete them. In the case of the Fay Fuqua Nude, he only made two, of which only the one here is available and unique on the market.
